OUT STORY

We were founded in 1981 by a group of volunteers who wanted to improve outcomes for their local community

about us

In 1981, a group of local people arranged for a needs analysis of the local community to be conducted by a social work student.  The analysis showed the overwhelming need within the community to have a “one-stop shop” of information regarding entitlements and local services and resources.

In March of 1981 Gosnells District Information Centre first opened its doors to the community.  The service was staffed entirely by volunteers who had been trained by the organisation. Immediately upon opening its doors the Centre’s services were in high demand, however the main needs of the clients was not for information alone.  Within months of opening its doors the Centre realised that it would need to provide the community with an advocacy service and hence the process of establishing the legal service began.

The Centre focused on providing legal services in 1983 after becoming accredited as a Community Legal Centre.  Other related services followed, with the introduction of a Family / Neighbourhood Mediation Service (the first in Western Australia) in 1986, a full-time Financial Counselling Service in 1987 and a Child Support Scheme Service in 1989.

A significant feature of our centre has been the involvement of local community members as volunteers in most areas of service delivery.  Volunteers have included lawyers, social workers, mediators, welfare workers, law students, an articled clerk, library worker and so on.

Over the past 40 years, Redgum Justice has played a significant role in the formation of a number of organisations, including:

  • Community Legal Western Australia
  • Financial Counsellors Association of Western Australia
  • Financial Wellbeing Collective
  • Consumer Credit Legal Service Inc
  • Tenancy WA
  • Forum of Family and Community Mediators of Western Australia.

In 2024 Gosnells Community Legal Centre again changed to meet the needs of the community and expanded the geographical footprint to support people outside of the Gosnells/ Armadale area. To reflect this change, we changed our name to Redgum Justice.

To date, Redgum Justice has been providing legal and welfare services for over four decades.  During this time, demand for services has increased significantly.  In response, the Centre has strategically worked to expand its capacity to provide much needed services and to proactively design services and initiatives aimed at preventing community legal and welfare issues arising.

In 2024 we changed again to meet the needs of our community and have grown our geographical footprint to cover more people, and have again expanded our service offering in line with the needs of our community. As part of this change, we have embraced the new name ‘Redgum Justice’. Whilst our name has changed, our focus has stayed the same – we are passionate about creating equity and advancing access to justice in our community.

The team at Redgum Justice are professional and passionate advocates for social justice, with each team member daily demonstrating their commitment to this purpose through their work.
